LG publish the first official shots of the new LG BL40 Chocolate!

Thursday, July 30, 2009 · 0 comments

Today LG took the next step towards revealing the identity of their BL40 fashion phone. Official photos of the device appeared on the manufacturer's web site showing the LG Chocolate successor in its full shine.

LG are yet hesitant to reveal the exact specifications of the new LG Chocolate, but the official announcement that's rumored for August should clear things out.

As (rather trustworthy) rumor has it the LG BL40 Chocolate will run on the latest S-Class interface, sporting an extraordinary 4" touchscreen display with cinema aspect ratio of 21:9 and a resolution of 800x345 pixels. A 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G are the other features expected to be on board.

The new LG Chocolate also has some sort of Dual Screen UI to help utilize the extra wide display better by showing two different types of content simultaneously.

We are also pretty eager to see when the LG BL42 little brother of the BL40 will get official confirmation. The slim slider has retained more of the spirit of the original LG Chocolate designwise, but its specs are an almost complete mistery so far.

The new LG Chocolate will be available beginning Q3 in 54 countries world-wide.

Samsung "AppStore" welcoming developers from today?

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 · 0 comments

Samsung will be launching the developer's backend of their Application Store today. By using the new Application Seller website, developers will be able to publish apps or content to Samsung Application store (Symbian, Windows Mobile and Java) as well as track sales records, revenue and even rankings. Billing and payment are also handled online through the new Application Seller website.

The Samsung Seller Site (not up yet) is the next step in the Samsung efforts in streamlining the apps and content delivery to end users. The Samsung Mobile Innovator has been up for more than half an year supporting developer's efforts. Samsung even launched a beta version of their Application Store in English and German earlier this year. The fully-fledged Samsung App store however will start spawning in regional versions across Europe in Q3 this year.

Registering on the new website is available after a basic entry fee of only one US dollar. The Seller Site members will be able to purchase a sales contract online and check the certification status in real-time.

These days almost every major manufacturer has an App Store running. There are so many, that having one will no longer give any manufacturer an edge but it will sure bring them up to the standard set by the competition. The Apple AppStore has been faring quite well and the massive amounts of new apps and games surely make the Apple iPhone quite an attractive platform despite its flaws.

In Samsung's case they've waited quite some time before they started their own apps distribution initiative probably to stay away of what has traditionally been a network carriers business. And as you probably know, network carriers are the largest customers of mobile phone manufacturers. But times are changing and so are the rules of the game obviously.

"Opera Mini" users view more than 10 billion pages in 1 month!

For the first time, Opera Mini users viewed more than 10 billion pages in one month according to the State of the Mobile Web report by Opera. The report provides information on the top global trends affecting the mobile Web. In addition to the top global trends and country snapshots, the report highlights trends in North America and the Caribbean.

Global trends

  • In June 2009, Opera Mini had nearly 26.5 million unique consumer users, a 4.2% increase from May 2009 and more than 143% compared to June 2008. These numbers reflect only the Opera Mini users who have specifically chosen to install the browser on their phone.
  • Those 26.5 million people viewed more than 10.4 billion pages in June 2009. This means that Opera Mini servers were processing more than 346 million pages per day. Since May, page views have gone up 8.4%. Since June 2008, page views have increased 224%.
  • In June 2009, Opera Mini users generated more than 168.4 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Since May, the data consumed went up by 5.6%. Data in Opera Mini is compressed up to 90%. If this data were uncompressed, Opera Mini users would have viewed almost 1.7 PB of data in June. Since June 2008, data traffic is up 236%.
  • The top 10 countries for Opera Mini usage this month are (in order): Russia, Indonesia, India, China, Ukraine, South Africa, U.S., U.K., Poland, Nigeria.
  • In the top 10 list of countries, India continued to move up the rankings overtaking China for third place.
  • Nokia phones continue to be the handsets of preference for Opera Mini users, with Sony Ericsson claiming second place. BlackBerry and Samsung phones are the preference in the United States.
  • North America and Caribbean trends

  • The top 10 countries using Opera Mini in North America and the Caribbean are the United States, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guatemala.
  • Martinique led the top 10 countries in unique user growth (2746.1%), while Guadaloupe led in page-view growth (a staggering 9804.8%).
  • Jamaica leads the top 10 countries in page views per user (357). Costa Rica (322) and Guadaloupe (308) are the other two countries with more than 300 page views per user per month.
  • In North America, BlackBerry handsets are the most popular, while Sony Ericsson handsets are the most popular in the Caribbean by a wide margin.
  • Google is the number one most visited site in all the countries, with the exception of Costa Rica, where Hi5 takes the number 1 spot.
  • Facebook remains the most popular social network in North America, while Hi5 is the most popular social network for mobile phones the Caribbean.

Fun facts about Opera Mini:

  • If every consumer Opera Mini user took a Nokia 6300 (the most popular phone among Opera Mini users) and stacked them vertically, top to bottom, the resulting tower would stretch to the International Space Station and back again…4 times.
  • Those same 26.5 million phones would stretch almost halfway around the Earth (.44 the equatorial radius).
  • 26.5 million Nokia 6300s outweigh the combined launch weight of a space shuttle with booster rockets and a Boeing 747.

comingsoon - "Facebook" Official Application to Android

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 · 0 comments

Some solid unofficial Facebook apps have cropped up for Android lately, but it looks like they're going to be displaced by an official app as soon as this week. It's going to be different than the iPhone one.

It's going to be more limited, for one, according to TechCrunch's source. But it's apparently going to revolve more tightly around the stream and status updates, using Facebook's newest Stream API that shows how many new stream updates are waiting for you as they come in. Better Stream integration doesn't really make up for not having an inbox though, personally. And all the crazy stuff the next iPhone app will have makes it look even more sadly barebones. But hey, it's happening at least, right??

Facebook apparently reversed course for the same reason Pandora did after calling it saying it "doesn't matter" last October: Android's just about ready for primetime. (Though it helped Google deemed the project important enough to let Facebook borrow an Android engineer.) It also adds credence to the idea we're in a third wave of Android apps—past the initial run, and the arrival of quality apps that really fit the OS—the big name apps.

HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian surprises us with an OLED touchscreen

Have you ever wanted a BlackBerry with a touchscreen and a full QWERTY? Well, if you happen to like Windows Mobile 6.5 too, then you might as well put the HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian on your wishlist - it's just what you've been after.

We posted some leaked photos and a spec sheet of the iPAQ K3 Obsidian back in May and now we've got more to show you. One thing seems to have changed - the screen, which the spec sheet had at 2.8", is now reportedly a 2.46" one based on AMOLED technology. A quick measurement of the live shots in Photoshop seems to support the 2.80 theory, given the phone measurements in the spec sheet are correct.

The screen, as we already hinted, is a तौच्स्क्रीन - not all too common for bars with full QWERTYs. The resolution is only QVGA though. The rest of the specs are in line with what the competition offers - the HP iPAQ K3 runs on a 528MHz CPU with 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM.

Connectivity in the Obsidian also doesn't disappoint - there's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, a microUSB and 3.5mm audio jack and finally - built-in GPS. A microSD card slot will help with expanding the internal storage।

The camera is the other thing that doesn't coincide with the initial data on the spec sheet. This new information puts the camera at 3.2 megapixels, but doesn't mention the LED flash. Either way, this is hardly a deal breaker.

Samsung S9110 wristwatch phone unveiled, no video calling though

Samsung announced the S9110 - the world's thinnest wristwatch mobile phone. Sporting a decent (for the class that is) feature set, the fully-touch operated Samsung S9110 is the next device that will try to make all you James Bond dreams come true.

Launched as a direct competitor to the LG GD910, the Samsung S9110 is almost 2mm slimmer, standing at the pretty acceptable 11.98mm. It also packs a larger 1.76" touchscreen and matches its Bluetooth connectivity and speech recognition features.

The Samsung S9110 also puts Outlook sync support to the table but unfortunately lacks the 3G support of the GD910. Well, we guess even with the advance of technology they still had to leave something out to make the S9110 so slim.

The lack of 3G not only means there's no high speed data on the thing, but more importantly - there will be no video calls support. Now that's a bummer, where's the fun in a wristwatch phone that doesn't allow video conferencing?

The Samsung S9110 should be able to offer a built-in speakerphone instead in case you really prefer talking to your wrist rather than using a Bluetooth headset. A scratch-resistant glass take cares of the protection of the little fella's pretty face.

The body of Samsung S9110 is crafted from stainless steel, while the strap is made from leather, giving it some pretty stylish looks.

The Samsung S9110 will hit the shelves in France this month for an estimated price of 450 euro.

Samsung announce 1GHz ARM CORTEX-A8 Hummingbird CPU

Samsung and Intrinsity jointly announced the fastest ARM Cortex-A8 processor architecture. Using 45 nm low-power, low-leakage process technology the processor codenamed Hummingbird, delivers the impressive 2000DMIPS at 1GHz.

Not only is the new processor amazingly powerful (almost twice as fast as the iPhone 3GS unit), but it is extremely energy efficient too. The Hummingbird can run at a high speed even at the minimum supply voltage of 1.0V, which makes it really suitable for use in mobile devices.

If the previous 600MHz Cortex-A8 could do 720p videos on the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD, we may not stretching it by far by expecting 1080p full HD recording on a mobile phone powered by the new Hummingbird.

The companies standing behind the ARM Cortex family development expect it to account for about half of the total market for mobile application processors by 2013. Quite a bold forecast but it might just as well come true, with ARM already having more than a dozen Cortex-A processor family licensees.

Though all this is nothing but exciting, we'd be more delighted when we see an actual working handset based on the new Hummingbird. The 1GHz Snapdragon mobile processor is already being implemented and you can already buy the Toshiba TG01 full touch PocketPC utilizing just that under its extra slim waistline. We guess by the time the Hummingbird gets to the market in one form or the other, it would have quite some competition to tackle.
